    {"id":10859,"date":"2024-03-22T11:01:55","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T15:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vault217.gmu.edu\/?p=10859"},"modified":"2024-03-22T11:01:55","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T15:01:55","slug":"lavinia-scott-papers-open-for-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vault217.gmu.edu\/?p=10859","title":{"rendered":"Lavinia Scott papers &#8211; Open for Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) and George Mason University (GMU) Libraries recently hosted an event celebrating the official opening of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/aspace.gmu.edu\/resources\/c0506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lavinia Scott papers<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This collection consists of 33 linear feet of material created and collected by missionary educator and speaker (Clara) Lavinia Scott (1907-1997) spanning circa the 1860s-1998, with particularly rich coverage surrounding her nearly 40 years (1932-1974) living and working as a missionary educator in present-day KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa. This includes professional correspondence and materials created by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), the United Church Board for World Ministries (UCBWM), the United Church of Christ (UCC), and South Africa\u2019s mission schools, particularly Inanda Seminary where Lavinia served as Principal for over 30 years (1936-1969). The pastor nearer me is the one who led our Anniversary Sunday service.&#8221;<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The opening event, held on Wednesday March 13, began with remarks from donor Dr. Peter Stearns, Lavinia\u2019s nephew and former GMU Provost and Professor of History. Dr. Stearns spoke about the history of the collection\u2019s materials and Lavinia\u2019s life and work. These remarks were followed by a presentation from SCRC Processing Manager Meghan Glasbrenner, who processed the Lavinia Scott papers from September 2022 \u2013 August highlighted potential areas of research within the materials, such as the experiences of women missionaries (with particular emphasis on Lavinia Scott), the history and evolution of South Africa\u2019s mission schools, and the stories of many of the schools\u2019 students and families.
