The Riot\u00a0Grrl\u00a0Collection<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is a comprehensive reproduction of zines, posters,\u00a0set lists, and other pieces of art from the\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0punk\u00a0era, spanning\u00a0roughly from\u00a01989-1996.\u00a0The question of, \u201cWhat is\u00a0riot\u00a0grrrl?\u201d\u00a0is one\u00a0worth asking when it comes to\u00a0both what is included in this book and when talking about the movement as a whole.\u00a0Throughout this collection,\u00a0members of the movement ask the same question of themselves and their readers, all giving slightly different answers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The essential root of riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0was an underground\u00a0subculture,\u00a0the hub of which was\u00a0in\u00a0the Pacific Northwest\u00a0and the D.C. area,\u00a0that\u00a0grew out of frustration\u00a0with the lack of women-centered radical politics in punk scenes.\u00a0Although punk music in the late 1970s and early 1980s championed anarchy and radical politics, its culture was\u00a0predominantly white\u00a0and male.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There were the \u201cmusicians\u201d and the \u201cgirlfriends\u201d,\u00a0replicating\u00a0the same misogynist\u00a0structures of mainstream society that punk was meant to stand against.\u00a0The\u00a0root of riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0was a desire to carve out a space for women and girls within punk music that would bring the angry punk sound to issues\u00a0that\u00a0affected\u00a0them. Topics in riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0lyrics and literature included\u00a0sexual assault, LGBT rights,\u00a0sex work,\u00a0racism,\u00a0eating disorders,\u00a0sexual freedom,\u00a0and\u00a0reflections on\u00a0being a woman\u00a0in a patriarchal world.\u00a0Popularized by the band Bikini Kill with their zine of the same name, the essential call of the riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0movement was, \u201cRevolution Girl Style Now.\u201d\u00a0(Darms\u00a07-17)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is reprinted\u00a0in this book\u00a0was\u00a0the fuel of the riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0movement:\u00a0zines and other paper paraphernalia printed and distributed\u00a0by mail.\u00a0Contrary to second wave feminist literature, which was often academic in tone and published\u00a0as books, riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0zines were purposefully sloppy, printed and copied\u00a0cheaply. The tone of the zines was also more abrasive than\u00a0previous\u00a0feminist literature, mimicking the punk rock style of\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0music\u00a0to drive the message home.\u00a0In addition to this, many publications invited their\u00a0readers to\u00a0write in\u00a0about\u00a0their lives and experiences\u00a0in the scene,\u00a0cultivating a sense of\u00a0community support.\u00a0Often this literature\u00a0was\u00a0distributed for free or for\u00a0very cheap\u00a0at riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0performances. Everything about riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0zines\u00a0were\u00a0intended to communicate and build support within the subculture\u00a0(Marcus).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0style of riot\u00a0grrls\u00a0was as DIY as their literature, making use of thrifted and upcycled items.\u00a0There was an emphasis on reclamation of feminine styles,\u00a0with\u00a0many\u00a0short skirts and girlish barrettes, mixed with more typical punk fare like combat boots and choppy, dyed haircuts.\u00a0There was also an element of\u00a0genderbending\u00a0to riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0fashion.\u00a0Many of the leading riot\u00a0grrls\u00a0groups had members who were openly lesbian or bisexual, their sense of style\u00a0leaning into\u00a0their queer identities.\u00a0Media reportage on the movement often focused heavily on the fashion aspect of riot\u00a0grrl, emphasizing\u00a0aesthetics over politics, which frustrated members\u00a0(Marcus).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reasons for the eventual fizzling out of the\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0movement are many.\u00a0With the explosion in popularity of\u00a0grunge\u00a0and\u00a0the mainstream popularity of bands that got their start through\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl,\u00a0like Hole and Sleater-Kinney,\u00a0the original intent of the movement was muddled.\u00a0While these\u00a0bands\u00a0performed\u00a0with women at their forefront, singing\u00a0angrily about\u00a0women\u2019s problems, the\u00a0sudden\u00a0marketability of punk and grunge aesthetics\u00a0overshadowed the feminist\u00a0politics.\u00a0In\u00a0<\/span>Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot\u00a0Grrl\u00a0Movement<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0Sara Marcus states, \u201cMass culture\u00a0<\/span>always<\/span><\/i>\u00a0contains\u00a0cleaned-up, camera-ready variations on the underground, incorporating just enough\u00a0of\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0\u2018edgy\u2019 to\u00a0maintain\u00a0its own relevance. Sometimes \u2013 if\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0lucky \u2013 these transformations\u00a0result\u00a0in\u00a0mass culture\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more interesting than usual, that entertains in a way that feels surprising, and that\u00a0perhaps even\u00a0helps\u00a0spread\u00a0progressive\u00a0values. But if a political\u00a0idea\u00a0is showing up in\u00a0mass\u00a0culture,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0happening\u00a0somewhere\u00a0else in a more concentrated, grassroots way.\u201d (327-328).\u00a0A good example of this phenomenon is how the \u201cgirl power\u201d message was co-opted as the slogan\u00a0for\u00a0the Spice Girls, which while a beloved female\u00a0pop\u00a0group did not have the same radical political messaging\u00a0that the phrase initially invoked.\u00a0(Marcus 327)\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to this, there were problems with intersectionality that persisted\u00a0within\u00a0the Riot\u00a0Grrl\u00a0movement during its\u00a0heyday.\u00a0While the movement was revolutionary for some, it left behind others. Within\u00a0<\/span>The Riot\u00a0Grrrl\u00a0Collection<\/span><\/i>, you can see writings\u00a0along this line. For example, these pages written by\u00a0Ramdasha\u00a0in\u00a0her\u00a0popular\u00a0zine \u201cGUNK\u201d,\u00a0expresses\u00a0frustration with\u00a0the overall whiteness of the riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0scene, and its inability to address\u00a0it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There were attempts by popular voices in the movement to\u00a0call\u00a0this\u00a0out through meetings and zines. There were\u00a0anti-racist workshops\u00a0and recommended readings that included the likes of Alice Walker, bell hooks, and Audre Lorde.\u00a0Regardless, the scene as well as its mainstream representation remained\u00a0largely white, and problems persisted\u00a0(Marcus).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along these same exclusionary lines, popular riot grrl bands \u2013 Tribe 8 and Le Tigre, to name a few \u2013 were known to play at Michigan Womyn\u2019s Musical Festival (Michfest), an event presenting itself as a feminist safe space, but which regularly and violently excluded trans women. Michfest\u2019s \u201cwomyn-born-womyn\u201d policy was widely known, as it was often the subject of feminist discourse surrounding the festival. In\u00a0<\/span>Whipping Girl:\u00a0A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity<\/span><\/i>, Julia Serano writes of this, \u201cI am sure these\u00a0women believe that they are protecting the values of lesbian and women\u2019s\u00a0space by opposing our inclusion at all costs, but in\u00a0reality,\u00a0the specific points\u00a0they make generally undermine feminist goals and beliefs rather than support\u00a0them. After all, at its core,\u00a0feminism is based on the conviction that women are\u00a0far more than the sex of the bodies that we are born into, and our identities and\u00a0abilities are capable of transcending the restrictive nature of the gender\u00a0socialization we endure during our childhoods.\u201d (182-183).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The willingness of riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0bands to\u00a0participate\u00a0in this event\u00a0despite\u00a0their\u00a0purported\u00a0desire\u00a0to build community among women\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0ignorance and\u00a0limits\u00a0to\u00a0their feminist mission.\u00a0In addition to that, it is difficult to find\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0literature of the period in support of trans women in the movement. This was clearly always a blind spot.\u00a0Because of\u00a0both\u00a0of these\u00a0failures of intersectionality, riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0feminism wound up operating with an exclusionary, self-defeating model.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, more simply, a lot of\u00a0big\u00a0riot\u00a0grrl\u00a0bands like Bikini Kill\u00a0and Heavens to Betsy were split up before the end of the 90s.\u00a0There was not the same proliferation of music as there once was, so the movement petered out\u00a0(Marcus).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, to answer the question of \u201cWhat is riot grrrl?\u201d I will adopt a similar perspective to that of its original proponents: it is what it is made of. Though as a movement, riot grrl has disappeared from the mainstream, the sound and politics of it still thrives in underground punk spaces. When people claim punk is dead, what they mean is it does not get mainstream attention, which is not the same thing as it being gone. If there are people out there creating punk music, punk music is alive and well. Bands like G.L.O.S.S., The Muslims, Dog Park Dissidents, and many others are influenced by previous feminist punk movements like riot grrl, but have expanded its ideological worldview to more explicitly include trans and racialized voices. Riot grrl lives on, but reshaped and reformed, as it must necessarily do. Kathleen Hanna, former lead singer of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, even said as much when asked about a potential riot grrl revival: \u201cDon\u2019t revive it,\u201d she said, \u201cMake something better.\u201d (Frere-Jones).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
