    {"id":530,"date":"2009-03-16T08:53:22","date_gmt":"2009-03-16T12:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/specialcollections.wordpress.com\/?p=530"},"modified":"2009-09-24T10:11:02","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T14:11:02","slug":"focusing-on-african-safaris-the-edith-mcchesney-ker-collection-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vault217.gmu.edu\/?p=530","title":{"rendered":"Focusing on African Safaris: The Edith McChesney Ker Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photography is traditionally a profession dominated by men, but one of SC&amp;A&#8217;s photography collections is the life work of a fascinating woman, Edith McChesney Ker.\u00c2\u00a0 Originally from Virginia, Edith&#8217;s life took an unexpected turn while\u00c2\u00a0 on an African safari in 1958.\u00c2\u00a0 While in Kenya, she met and fell in love with her future husband, Donald Ker, owner of Ker &amp; Downey Safaris.\u00c2\u00a0 Edith later moved to Kenya to be with Donald and became an avid photographer of wildlife and nature.\u00c2\u00a0 The East African Wildlife Society used more than 50 of her photographs for their Christmas cards and calendars.\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, some of her photographs have been used in\u00c2\u00a0educational books for children.<\/p>\n<p>After Donald&#8217;s death in 1981, Edith traveled around the world, capturing her adventures through photography. Many of the photographs in the Edith Ker Collection document these adventures.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 However, some of my favorite images come from early years in Africa.<\/p>\n<div
