Travelers who wished to get from one place to another, and had the means to do so, generally preferred steam transport to horse-based travel. An important tool for planning any trip at that time was the guide to railway or steamship lines.<\/p>\n<p>The Evans Railway Guide to the South and Southwest is a rare guide to railroads in the southern part of the country during the post-Civil War period.
