In an effort to bring more attention to our recently processed\/reprocessed archival collections, we will be posting links to our new and updated finding aids from time to time! This round we have an interesting variety of collections that are now available for access in SCRC.<\/p>\n
The Chester H. McCall papers.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n This collection was reprocessed by Processing Student Assistant Lana Mason.<\/em><\/p>\n “Chester H. McCall served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce (1933-1937) under Daniel C. Roper in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration. While in the Department of Commerce, McCall headed up the administrative, public relations, and publications efforts of the department’s Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, National Bureau of Standards, and Bureau of Air Commerce. He was also a member of the Executive Board of the National Youth Administration, secretary of several Cabinet committees, and represented Commerce in several inter-departmental committees.<\/p>\n “The Chester McCall Papers contain materials from his tenure at the Department of Commerce as well as his private life. The materials include correspondence between Chester McCall, Secretary Roper, government employees, and business leaders; speech drafts: ‘Credit and the New Deal’ (March 13, 1934), ‘Regimentation and Recovery’ (November 6, 1934), ‘Trading for Peace’ (August 16, 1934); and contemporary news clippings regarding the Roosevelt Administration and the Department of Commerce. The materials also include documents and writings pertaining to McCall’s personal life, memorand[a,] and a handwritten note from Franklin D. Roosevelt.”<\/p>\n The Stephen S. Fuller papers<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n This collection was processed by Processing Student Assistant Bill Keeler.<\/em><\/p>\n “Dr. Stephen S. Fuller received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Rutgers University and a Doctorate in Regional Planning and Economic Development from Cornell University. He has authored hundreds of articles, papers, and reports about the Washington, D.C. area’s economic development. Dr. Fuller joined the George Mason University staff in 1994, serving as Professor of Public Policy. He also served as the Director of the Ph.D. Program of Public Policy from July 1998-2002. Fuller was chosen by the George Mason University Board of Visitors to be a University Professor in September 2001. He also served as a Dwight Schar Faculty Chair. Dr. Fuller is now the Director of The Stephen S. Fuller Institute. Before joining the George Mason University faculty, Dr. Fuller served on the faculty at George Washington University as Chairman of the Department of Urban Planning and Real Estate Development, as well as spending one year as Director of Doctoral Programs for the School of Business and Public Management.<\/p>\n “This collection includes photographs, maps, and numerous reports with topics ranging from construction, transportation, federal spending, employment trends, population growth, and economic forecasts within Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.”<\/p>\n Northern Virginia Farmer’s Diary.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n This collection was processed by Manuscripts and Archives Librarian Liz Beckman.<\/em><\/p>\n “Th[is] collection consists of a one-volume ‘pocket diary’ of a Northern Virginia farmer from 1867. The diary was published for ‘professional men’ in New York, and contains dates for the year 1860. The owner of the diary crossed out 1860 and wrote in 1867, and altered each day of the week so that it was consistent with the day on which each date fell in 1867. The diary’s owner recorded entries about the daily weather, planting of crops, purchase of materials and livestock, and general work done on the farm, including information on farm laborers. He also included occasional family details and recorded visitors to the farm, and drew a few sketches of people at the end of the diary.”<\/p>\n The Sallie Montgomery Travel Diary.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n This collection was processed by Manuscripts and Archives Librarian Liz Beckman.<\/em><\/p>\n “[A t]wo volume travel diary of Sallie Montgomery of Fredericksburg, VA, who went with Lena Harrison to San Francisco by train in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. Their trip began in Washington, D.C. on June 5 (the date of the first entry in the diary), and the last entry in the diary is dated August 24. The diary contains descriptions of stops across the United States, including a visit to a Pueblo village in New Mexico or Arizona, as well as experiences at the fair itself and a summary of part of John McGroaty’s “California: Its History and Romance” on the backs of the pages of the first volume of the diary.”<\/p>\n Follow Special Collections Research Center on Social Media at our\u00a0Facebook<\/a>,\u00a0Instagram<\/a><\/span>, and\u00a0Twitter<\/a><\/span>\u00a0accounts.
