I’m not much of a cocktail party person (I prefer Netflix in my PJs), but occasionally, I manage to drag myself out of the house in the evening for some light socializing.  If you\u2019ve ever been to any sort of party, you know that the one question you can always anticipate is \u201cwhat do you do?\u201d And when I give my answer\u2014\u201cI specialize in archival digitization\u201d\u2014one of the most common follow-up questions is \u201cwhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a good question! Digitization involves so many\ndifferent steps and tasks done in particular order that it can be difficult to\nconceptualize.  Usually, it helps to walk\nsomeone through a loose workflow, to help them understand what it means to\ndigitize, from step one to step done. Today, that someone is you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a very general workflow for our C-SPAN digitization\nproject.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Project planning<\/li>
  2. Physical preparation<\/li>
  3. Preliminary metadata collection<\/li>
  4. Quality checking<\/li>
  5. Imaging & additional metadata collection<\/li>
  6. Quality checking (again)<\/li>
  7. Post-processing<\/li>
  8. Quality checking (again again)<\/li>
  9. Data cleanup and preparation <\/li>
  10. Posting\/sharing\/storing<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Keep in mind that each of these steps is done for every\nsingle box we hope to digitize.  That\u2019s\nten steps, and we haven\u2019t even gotten into the weeds yet!  Let\u2019s break it down a little further (emphasis\non \u201ca little\u201d) to give an overview of what this looks like in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
